Gum Disease

Your Highlands Ranch Kids Dentist

vpatient1At Colorado Kids Pediatric Dentistry, our mission is to help our patients develop strong, healthy teeth through high quality dental care while maintaining a fun, friendly, and worry-free office environment. Our doctors are experts in working with children, and our highly trained team of pediatric dental specialists has the knowledge and skills to make every trip to our office a pleasant experience for all involved. While normally, standard cleanings and other general dental procedures are enough for this, sometimes other conditions can develop and require more intensive care. Periodontal disease - more commonly known as gum disease - is one of those conditions.

Periodontal Disease in Children

Gum disease, while more common in adults, can develop in children, causing inflammation, tooth loss, and potentially bone damage. Periodontal disease is a progressive condition that often starts with seemingly insignificant warning signs - the most common being a film of bacteria on the teeth known as plaque. While it may seem harmless, this milky white film can cause serious damage to your child's teeth

In its early stages, gum disease is known as gingivitis. This can cause gums to appear swollen and to bleed easily, particularly during brushing. Bad breath (halitosis) and a chronic bad taste in the mouth are other warning signs. As the disease progresses to periodontitis, serious structural damage to the teeth and jawbones can occur - sometimes leading to tooth extraction.

Prevention & Treatment

Thankfully, gum disease is easy to prevent. A strong oral hygiene routine of brushing and flossing is usually enough to stave off gingivitis, and a healthy, balanced diet that's low in sugary and acidic foods adds a layer of prevention. If you do believe your child may be developing gum disease, schedule an appointment with us and we'll take a look.
