DDS vs DMD: Is There a Difference? Have you noticed that Dr. Fox, Dr. Waguespack and Dr. LeBlanc have different letters behind their names? These abbreviations represent different degrees from different dental schools.
"What’s the difference?" The fact is, there is no difference. The requirements for both the DDS and DMD degrees are exactly the same, and to become an accredited professional, a student in either program must successfully complete the same test: the National Board Dental Examinations, Parts I and II. In addition, residents of both programs must pass either a regional or state dental board examination as well as a state ethics exam before practicing dentistry in your state. Dr. Lisa Fox obtained a DDS degree, awarded by the University of Texas, Dr. Kathleen Waguespack obtained a DMD degree awarded by Oregon Health and Sciences University, and Dr. Julie LeBlanc obtained a DDS degree, awarded by Creighton University.
